The “planetary lots” are each associated with one of the seven classical planets (including the Sun and Moon). This talk will show how the doctrine of these lots was transmitted from its Mediterranean beginnings to its prominent place in Arabic and later astrology, especially in the work of Abū Ma‘shar. We’ll see how systems of calculation and the interpretive importance of these lots developed, with examples, from the Greco-Roman to the medieval period.
